Scripture: But Moses replied, “Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the Lord’s people were prophets and that the Lord would put his Spirit on them!” Number 11:29
Observation: This, in fact, will come to pass. All the Lord's people do have the Spirit given to them, through Jesus Christ. While this was something held for a small number of prophets and leaders in the past - though clearly not reserved for just one person - it is not available to all of us.
That said, it is telling to see that these elders prophesy at this event, but do not do so again (v25). However, we know this took place so that these elders could share some leadership burdens with Moses, and thus the Spirit must have remained upon them. It certain, then, took the form of other gifts, like wisdom, administration, mercy, encouragement, knowledge, and faith. These were elements Moses would have needed ... other leaders who could listen to the masses and give them answers, guidance, correction, and optimism regarding God's directions.
Application: I remain hungry for more of the Holy Spirit. I have some gifts from the Spirit, I know. I am not jealous for other gifts like prophesy. However, I do wish to better apply what I have to God's service, and to have more spirit-filled experiences.
Prayer: Lord, I do pray for your Spirit today and every day. May what I have in the way of ability be put to your use this day, for your glory, and for the aid of those you love. Amen.
