Scripture: And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures. You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability. 2 Peter 3:15-17
Observation: Peter references the letters of Paul, ascribing to them three traits:
1) They contain sound advice consistent with his own advice related to patience and wisdom for the coming of Jesus.
2) They can be confusing and therefore become twisted by people either out of ignorance to bad intentions.
3) In these ways, Paul's letters are like the other Scriptures.
All three of these qualities are interesting because they imply a level of elevated authority. The fact that Paul and Peter are in agreement on advice to the church while acting independently reinforces the truth and work of the Holy Spirit in their words and teachings. Second, while Peter is a simple fisherman, Paul is an educated man and thus his teaching can be both deeper but also more difficult to understand. Finally, Peter directly bestows the authority of Jewish Scriptures upon Paul's letters - he does not say they are like the Scriptures, but rather they are misinterpreted like "the other Scriptures" ... Paul's letters are one Scripture, and the Old Testament books are the other Scriptures.
Application: I don't have a lot to say today but this: After several conversations I've had recently, it is great to see Peter is such support of Paul. "Church people" like to think of them as if they were at odds. There is one example of an argument between Peter and Paul (both reported in Acts and referenced in other letters), and then they went separate ways (Peter to the Jews, Paul to the Gentiles), and people like to say "see, the early church had strife even between their two greatest leaders!" That just isn't true.
Paul and Peter were unified. They spoke of each other, and valued the fact they had different callings - they could cover twice the audience that way!! They both comment on the greatness of each other, and here Peter equates Paul's writings to being equal to Moses, Joshua, Isaiah, Samuel, Jeremiah, etc.
The church was not in conflict. The church doesn't need to be in conflict, even when leaders disagree. It's nice to see.
Prayer: Lord, please be with the pastors - all the pastors - at Evergreen Church. I pray for Phil, Laurie, Jed, Bette, Caleb. Give them unity not only between themselves, but with others in our church. Let your spirit unite minds and hearts. Stand between us and Satan so he can no longer whisper his lies in the ears of others and foster division, anger, jealousy, doubt, and fear. Amen.

Gold Can't Buy
Scripture:
Come, everyone who thirsts,
come to the waters;
and he who has no money,
come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
without money and without price.
Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread,
and your labor for that which does not satisfy?
Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good,
and delight yourselves in rich food.
Isaiah 55:1-2
I wasn't going to blog today, but instead post this AWESOME video of one of my favorite songs of all time. This is a shockingly great video, acoustic and done on both clifftops and at the lowest place on earth. However ... I hit this line ...
What treasure waits within your scars?
This gift of freedom gold can't buy.
I bought the world and sold my heart,
You traded heaven to have me again.
It is SO amazing when God's word aligns to my daily plan. All I can do is be amazed and worship my Lord!!

Some Next Steps
Scripture: For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. 2 Peter 1:5-7
Observation: Peter opens his letter with a list of spiritual fruit, and then goes on to state that these are important and Christians need to be reminded of these traits regularly, for following and improving in these traits will guide their lives. These start with faith, but proceed with virtue (excellence), knowledge, self-control, steadfastness, godliness, brotherly affection (kindness), and love. In current language ... once you have faith in Jesus, you should improve your behavior, read scripture, control your bodily sins, remain strong, seed God's laws, be kind to others, and love one another.
Application: Effectively, this is a one-sentence summary of proper "Christian" behavior. It closely aligns to so many other such summaries, including Paul's fruit of the spirit. So the question today is ... why do Christians - myself often included - fail to accomplish or even attempt to strive for these traits?
I believe the biggest reason for this is that so many of them involve relationship. Many of these traits define proper interactions with others, or at the very least involve behavior that is observable and therefore judged by others. I personally don't do well with others. I get mad while driving, struggle to love and be kind, and generally can't be "excellent".
This defines the daily struggle, and the daily walk with God. My daily walk needs to be even simpler. It needs to start with humility of myself, mercy and justices for others, and attention to God.
Prayer: Lord, today and every day, help me to seek justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with you. Amen.

The Purpose of Prophesy
Scripture:
The former things I declared of old;
they went out from my mouth, and I announced them;
then suddenly I did them, and they came to pass.
Because I know that you are obstinate,
and your neck is an iron sinew
and your forehead brass,
I declared them to you from of old,
before they came to pass I announced them to you,
lest you should say, ‘My idol did them,
my carved image and my metal image commanded them.’
Isaiah 48:3-5
Observation: The purpose of scripture is faith.
God pronounces his intentions through the prophets not to warn the faithful or advise the believers, but to challenge the doubters and show proof to the non-believers. He says what he will do, then does it, so that the stiff-necked and stubborn people will be faced with evidence, and so none of them can say that there is some other force that achieved those results.
Application: If this is true, then why is prophesy today a "church thing"? We believe people can receive and pass on a word from God, but that we do this in the church. While this may be good, it probably isn't a complete understanding of the way God works. God wants his prophetic word delivered to non-believers, so that when he suddenly does his thing others will be confronted with the evidence of God.
We - the Church - do have prophesies yet to come. However, we also receive small words for others from time to time. It is important that we are bold enough to pronounce those words to those outside the church to eventually aid them in their understanding of God.
Prayer: My father, today I seek your word and your strength. If you have a thought for others, please send me to pronounce it, and give me the strength to do so in faith. I do ask that you produce evidence for the hearts of my unbelieving friends ... that you provide the proof of your authority that kindles their belief. Thy will be done. Amen.

Good to be Maligned
With respect to this they are surprised when you do not join them in the same flood of debauchery, and they malign you; but they will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. 1 Peter 4:4-5
Observation: Peter's encouragement of the church includes this - that the church members will be insulted because if their behavior, but not because they behave badly. Rather, they will be challenged and insulted because they refuse to behave badly yet consistently with the rest of society. While society engages in all sorts of bad behavior - in sexual sin, alcohol and drug induced parties, lawlessness, debauchery, earthly passions, and idolatry - members of the church will be looked down upon for refusing to do the same.
Application: This happens everywhere, daily, today. Society looks at 'the church' and insults us for ... not supporting gay marriage, or opposing birth control methods, or standing against certain movies. We are maligned because - in their eyes - we are not enlightened enough to understand the freedom others should have. They believe that by our non-participation or even active resistance, that we judge or even hate those who participate in these activities.
That is the trap, of course. To not condone the sin, while also not judging the sinners. From the outside, they seem very intertwined. From the church perspective, there is a difference, but that difference is very difficult to maintain. I try to do it. But mostly, I try not to be defensive and lash out when I am judged for not engaging in the culture.
Going forward, I will look at such malignment as a blessing. When I am maligned, it is because others see something different in me. I want to be different. Therefore, challenging my position on such issues isn't a cause for defensive, but a compliment.
Prayer: Lord, I thank you for your love and guidance in all matters. Today, may I be different from others. May I not be part of the ways of this world, and may that difference between myself and others cause others to question my thought process. In those moments, I pray for both peace of mind, and for your words so that I may guide others to know Jesus more and more. Amen.

Introduction to Hope
Scripture: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 1 Peter 1:3-5
Observation: Most apostle letters begin with praise of God and pronouncement of faith in Jesus. This letter is no different, as it quickly praises God for the promise of love, mercy, and eternal life through faith and hope and Jesus.
Application: I need God's love, hope, and blessing today. I remain discouraged by worldly events, and I am further frustrated by challenges at work. Nothing is un-overcome-able, and this introduction by Peter today reminds me of that fact. God has protection, promises, and love for me. That same love extends to all believers, and to the entire world, especially to those who place their hope in Jesus.
I place my hope in Jesus every day. And today, I further claim God's promised protection and love, even as I go through trials and challenges. They are nothing ... they are even small by worldly comparisons, and even smaller in the context of eternal salvation and life in heaven with Jesus. I shall not worry, nor shall I be afraid, for today God walks with me.
Prayer: My Lord and father, thank you for your love, and for the love and salvation of Jesus. Please be with me today. Please guide my words and my work. May I be an instrument that helps others, through wise decisions and insightful words may my work improve the lives of others. Mostly, may I serve your will today both in my life and in the lives of others. Amen.

Love is the True Law
Scripture: Although most of the many people who came from Ephraim, Manasseh, Issachar and Zebulun had not purified themselves, yet they ate the Passover, contrary to what was written. But Hezekiah prayed for them, saying, “May the Lord, who is good, pardon everyone who sets their heart on seeking God—the Lord, the God of their ancestors—even if they are not clean according to the rules of the sanctuary.” And the Lord heard Hezekiah and healed the people. 2 Chronicles 30:18-20
Observation: Israel by now has fallen to Assyria, but Hezekiah invites everyone to the Passover. Some of the remnant of Israel come to Judah and participate, however they have been so removed from God that they are not able to be ceremonially clean for the event. Hezekiah overlooks this, prays for them, and God is accepting of their participation.
In other words, we see God delineate between the letter of "the law" and the spirit of the love of God. There are parts of the law that existed only to differentiate the Jews from others - to ensure their seriousness in being a people set apart. Those laws had a purpose, but they were nothing compared to a humble heart that longs for the Lord and seeks his face and his love. The Jews of Israel no longer exist as a nation - in fact, for the most part they will never recover and will evolve into the Samaritans who believe in God but for almost 600 years are excluded from Jewish culture - yet God accepts their heart despite their inability to comply with the rote procedures of the law.
Application: God has always had the authority to 'lower the bar' for receiving his love and engaging in his family. The base requisite remains faith ... faith in him, now expressed through faith in Jesus Christ. However, everything else is negotiable and based on the nature of what is in one's heart. Yes, eventually what is in one's heart is reflected in their actions, but everyone must be allowed a starting point. For that starting point, loving God and wishing to be near him has always been the only true requirement.
Prayer: Lord, as I begin my busy day, please keep my heart near you. I am no longer ignorant of proper behavior, so I will be humble and accountable to your word. But I also want to simply keep my heart close to you today. May my small love reach out to your mighty, amazing, all consuming love, and may I receive the warmth of your love this day. Amen.

Refuge and Strength
Scripture:
God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging
Psalm 46:1-3
Observation: The Bible if full of "do not be afraid" messages, but this psalm reminds us of the reason not to fear - God is ever-present in all situations. God is in the mountains and the sea. He is there when the mountains erupt and the waters storm. God is all over the earth and in every situation where there is trouble. And God is our protection. He is our place of refuge. He is our strength and defense.
We are not to be afraid because God protects us, and he is mightier than any problem on earth or in heaven. God protects us from every possible trouble and problem and issue, be it physical or spiritual, of earth or of man.
Application: This week, I think I hit my breaking point with all the race-related violence. I know the problem and I get the issue ... I understand the prophesy and am aware of the times we live in. However, the continual intentional attacks are just events I can no longer endure. I am afraid. I'm not afraid in a way that worries about my life because I am comfortable with both my mortality and my community, but I am afraid in the concept of the day-to-day chaos and challenges facing everyone. This especially includes my family and my church.
God is my refuge and my strength. God is ever-present in my life. God will help me in times of trouble. And these ARE times of trouble. Every day I am trying to turn my heart over to God for comfort. I know God is on the throne of heaven, and that he is in control. I know there will a come a time when heaven will all fall silent and look, because God is about to take care of the situation with a mighty hand. I know Jesus will come again.
But I also know the church is the hope of the world ... and as the world is in so desperate need of hope right now, that must mean it needs the church even more. I believe the work is not finished. I believe wars will get worse, and men will become more evil. I believe my country will fall. It is in that uncertainty that I am afraid for the future and for the strength of those I love.
So I will turn to my refuge, and rely on the strength of God. I will try not to be afraid.
Prayer: Lord, you are in total control. You are my strong tower, my rock, my foundation, my refuge, my fortress, my protector, and my defender. I trust in you, therefore I will not fear. Please look upon these days and spread your love. Overcome hate. Please, Lord, protect your church and protect my family from these days. And may your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Amen.

The Way for the People
Scripture:
And a highway will be there;
it will be called the Way of Holiness;
it will be for those who walk on that Way.
The unclean will not journey on it;
wicked fools will not go about on it.
Isaiah 35:8
Observation: The prior verses involve Messianic prophesy - the lame walk, the deaf hear, the blind see. And then The Way appears, just as Jesus called himself The Way and the faith of the early church was called The Way. So if this is a prophesy of the founding of the Church of Jesus Christ, what are the characteristics of the church? It is holy ... it exists for the believers and the unclean/wicked will not use it.
Application: I am too exhausted by "stuff" at church to really appreciate the church itself. I get wrapped up in issues about the people there, and end up caring more about people who aren't in the church yet instead. Isaiah says the church itself is for the members - to guide and protect believers.
I likely need to engage more with people at church. I need friends at church, especially those I can share time and burdens with. Mostly, I need to stop judging people at church by their mistakes, and see them as brothers and sisters who struggle like I do and can use assistance just like me.
Prayer: Lord, please do forgive my judgment. Continue to work within me to overcome my judgmental ways, guide me in humility and faith, so I may walk with you daily. Amen.

it will be called the Way of Holiness;
it will be for those who walk on that Way.

Faith and Humility
Scripture: By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward. Hebrews 11:24-26
Observation: As the author discusses the faith of the patriarchs and prophets and judges, he ascribes to Moses a direct connection to the Christ. While he did not know the name of Jesus, he understood that his disgrace - hard labors, outcast as a shepherd, life in the desert, mocking before Pharaoh, questioning by Jewish elders - was meaningless if he was faithful to the promise of God. God promised delivery from slavery, which is the promise of the Christ, and Moses was willing to give up a soft life in order to pursue that promise.
Application: What parts of my life would I give up for the promise of Jesus? As I have reflected before, the hardest for me to consider are my home and family - my family is my great love on earth, and my home is also their home where they receive safety and comfort. I do believe I would give up everything else for Jesus. I would give up my job, my position, my health, my comfort. I fear being asked for such sacrifices, but I regard Jesus as a greater value.
This needs to begin with humility. Moses humbled himself before God, and thus in the earthly eyes of other Jews, Pharaoh, and the world's perspective of societal rank. In so doing, he became eternally famous and eternally blessed. The same was true for the entire litany of people listed in Hebrews - from Abel to Gideon. They all first humbled themselves both to God and within the context of the world's view of people.
Prayer: Lord, I do humble myself to you today. I am happy doing your work wherever you place me, be it in my current position or elsewhere. I will lower myself, soften myself, and be reserved as it serves you. May I be your servant, following your commands. Amen.
Amen.

On Plots and Plans
Scripture:
Do not call conspiracy
everything this people calls a conspiracy;
do not fear what they fear,
and do not dread it.
The Lord Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy,
he is the one you are to fear,
he is the one you are to dread.
Isaiah 8:12-13
Observation: God begins to outline both the downfall of Israel, and the restoration of all mankind through the Messiah. His instructions to Isaiah include this concept: Fear only the Lord for it is only he who can truly destroy and only he who is in charge of all things; And for that reason, do not fear the things that non-believers fear, or analyze situations in the same way they assess them.
In other words, those who have turned from God see the coming of war as a plot and plan of men. God however is in control, and the coming of war is an act of God. If they were to fear God, the hardships of war would not have been necessary for God is in control. Since they do not fear God, they now believe that the punishments of God are the acts of men.
Application: Prophesy isn't just prediction - it is revelation of God's thoughts and will. It is the same on the verse discussed yesterday ... when Jesus says that nation will rise against nation, he was not just predicting the actions of men, but rather foretelling the actions ordained by God for the end times.
My lesson, then, is this: God is in control. Yes, he allows free will of men, and yes, terrible things happen. But God is on the throne, he is sovereign over all the earth, and "his hand is still upraised". God is to be honored and respected, and no other person or issue or problem is to be feared on earth.
Prayer: Dear Lord, all honor is yours! You are indeed the God of the earth, the one creator, the maker of all things, and my King. May thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Amen.

The Hard Work of Rebellion
Scripture:
When Ephraim spoke, people trembled;
he was exalted in Israel.
But he became guilty of Baal worship and died.
Now they sin more and more;
they make idols for themselves from their silver,
cleverly fashioned images,
all of them the work of craftsmen.
It is said of these people,
“They offer human sacrifices!
They kiss calf-idols!”
Hosea 13:1-2a
Observation: God concludes his charges against Israel by listing them out one more time, and performing human sacrifices is ... third on the list. First and foremost, the sin is that they have turned their worship and honor away from God, and worshiped other gods, and second is they have created and honored hand-made idols.
It is interesting that, in describing the idols, it is said they are made by craftsmen. These are not rough images - the idols are not poorly or hastily constructed things - they are of the finest workmanship, the finest quality, and the finest artistry. They are excellent in their design and appearance, made by the best people available, and likely at a significant cost. In summary, there are four characteristics of the idols Israel now worship:
1) They required a collective effort from several people to create.
2) They required focused and intentional design and work to create.
3) They required significant time and resources to create.
4) They are 100 percent man-made.
In other words, there is no possible way Israel "accidentally" began worshiping idols. They could not have begun worshiping some natural part of creation as a physical representation of God and inadvertently over time turned it into idol worship. They deliberately, with intentionality, and with significant effort and group planning, abandoned God in favor of empty gods created with their own hands.
Application: My two brief thoughts about this today are that, first, there is an element of this that comes back to self-worship ... that part of what Israel was doing, and what everyone including myself is prone to do, is to worship our own skills and ability.
My second thought is that there is an entire level of effort implied by this that reveals not the anger of God, but the patience and love of God. God is about to destroy Israel, but look at the prolonged effort they went through to bring about that wrath! They didn't just ignore God, they worked really, really hard to replace God, then work even harder and with more explicit behavior to pursue their new false beliefs.
This seems exactly like the world today. To abandon God's love, purposes, and path in your life, you have to make it almost your daily mission to do something else. Some have turned sexuality from something done occasionally with a person you love into the entire daily identity of their existence behaviorally and physically. Some have turned human comforts from something prayed for into the sole work of their every waking hour at the cost of all relationships. Some have turned anger from a natural emotion to be overcome into an all-consuming definition of their being that destroys friends, strangers, communities, and themselves.
In every case, the choices being made are not equal. In every case, individuals, groups, and communities are choosing to proceed down a path that involves exceptional work, complete restructuring of lives, and emotional hardship and tragedy, instead of the pat that involves ... prayer, loving comfort, and a relationship with God and Jesus.
Before I point the finger, I WILL consider today where I may be spending exceptional effort on something that is destined to bring me hardship, and evaluate it against this biblical principle. However, in light of current events, I fear the coming wrath of God against our nation.
Prayer: Lord, I pray for communities torn apart by race today. We knew this was coming. You told us about this thousands of years ago. However, so many people are choosing the difficult and laborious path of open rebellion against you, instead of the easy path that finds rest in you. For I know your way is gentle, and your burden is light. May we simply begin to seek rest in you, oh Lord. Amen.

God the Context
Scripture: Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it. For we also have had the good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed. Hebrews 4:1-2
Observation: There is an interesting evaluation of the difference between those who believe in Jesus and those who don't, and it is in the concept of the "value" of the gospel. For those who believe, the gospel is amazing. However, for those who don't - those that do not share the faith or combine their hearing about Jesus with a faith - the gospel has "no value." None.
Application: This information again addresses the idea of how Jesus is perceived differently by those who enter in the hearing about him with a lack of belief in God. There is again a baseline concept that people need to have before learning about Jesus - they must believe in the existence of God. With just that minimum faith - a faith that even just says "maybe there is a god" - the gospel of Jesus can take hold. With a faith that says "I believe there is one God but I don't know anything about him and maybe even distrust or hate him," the gospel can not only take hold, but it can transform a life.
I try to imagine what the gospel of Jesus must sound like to someone who doesn't even believe God exists. There is no context ... no introductory clause. The gospel cannot begin with "for God so loved the world". It can't even begin with the negative statement that God judges sin for which no man is good enough to atone.
Again, I am reminded of this context in reaching other people. We can and must talk about the good news of Jesus, but even the gospel has the context of God - Yahweh, Jehovah, Adonai, Elohim, El Shaddai, Abba - and when a person is completely missing that context, it is likely the gospel is worthless. God is the beginning and the end of the conversation. God is the great point ... we were created to worship, honor, and enjoy him for eternity. Jesus is our redeemer who provides the only way for that to happen. As I go forward to speak to others, may I ensure I discuss the context as well as the good news itself.
Prayer: Dear Lord, my Lord and God, the great God the creator, God almighty, my master and my father ... I love you. I am not often a worthy son. I am, in fact, unworthy, which is why the great salvation of faith through Jesus is a miracle of your love. Today, I pray for those who do not know you, Lord. I pray for those who are ignorant of the idea of a creator and most powerful God. But most of all, I pray for those who have chosen to deny you. I pray for the angry, the hurt, the sick, the lost. I pray for those who have blamed you for the consequences of their actions, or evil brought on them by Satan, and have cursed you in their hurt and anger. I pray they realize that they cannot hate something that does not exist, and therefore it is their very hatred that shows you are real. In that context, they can at least hear about your true love. Please be with those people today, Lord. I know your love is overwhelming and the all consuming quality of you, and that you love them even in their broken hatred. Please bestow your love on them this day. Amen, and amen.

Divisive Behaviors
Scripture: But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless. Warn a divisive person once, and then warn them a second time. After that, have nothing to do with them. Titus 3:9-10
Observation: Divisive people in the church engage in four useless activities - they quarrel about rules and traditions; they randomly argue; they engage in meaningless controversies; they rely upon their family name for honor.
Application: Once again, I self reflect on this list to determine which of these I may be doing. While I may engage in some argumentative discussions outside the church, I do not think I do this a lot within the church. What I am most likely to do, then, is not to warn others of their behavior. I need to pay attention to this ... I need to first watch myself better to ensure I am not being divisive, then I need to love others in order to gently correct them when I see it.
Prayer: Lord, please give me the heart of your Spirit when serving within your church. May I not be divisive, and may I instead be an example for peaceable living within the body of Christ. Amen.
