I’m doomed to live in Meshech,
cursed with a home in Kedar,
My whole life lived camping
among quarreling neighbors.
I’m all for peace, but the minute
I tell them so, they go to war!
Psalm 120:5-7
Observation: The psalmist cries out to the Lord for help because he is surrounded by liars. These are people who simply look to destroy others with their lies ... this is their entire goal in life, harming others. These people are everywhere. They aren't just people out to get him specifically, but rather this attitude of being harmful toward everyone is the culture of absolutely everyone. This is the people ... the people that populate everywhere he lives.
Application: I have said it recently, and I say it again, this is Seattle. How my heart breaks that I am doomed to live in Meshech. I am cursed to have my home in Kedar. I am camped in a place where everyone is a liar, speaking untruth that violates both moral and natural laws, with the outcome that it harms everyone. And whoa be to the faithful who desire peace and joy, for the liars are ready to go to war against us.
I don't want to live here anymore. However, I will live wherever the Lord wants me and my wife, and I know he wants us here for now. There is no doubt about that. Therefore, I do not ask to leave, but I do know that I live in a dark place, where all those around me are infested with corrupt hearts. They are bareface liars and couldn't care less how they harm others with their societal warfare.
Prayer: Lord, yes, please protect my family and I from the attacks of the society around us. Save us from harm from such liars. Yet in all of this, please also give us the strength to do your work, speak of love and peace and joy and truth, and declare it all in your name. Amen.
