Scripture: No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs, but rather tries to please his commanding officer. Similarly, anyone who competes as an athlete does not receive the victor’s crown except by competing according to the rules. The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops. 2 Timothy 2:4-6
Observation: After saying this, Paul tells Timothy to reflect on it without explanation. It is meant to be confusing and cryptic. It appears to be three ways of stating the same lesson. However, I think this is actually three different instructions, building on each other.
-- Believers are soldiers of Christ, and therefore are to strive to please Jesus and not get bogged down in worldly issues.
-- Pleasing Christ is defined by performing as prescribed by Christ and doing his will.
-- If we do these things, we can be sure that there are rewards even here on earth, that will provide for our daily needs.
Application: I must never again get bogged down in the worldly expectations of my job. My job may involve earthly work, but in the future I must do it with heavenly intent and outcomes. Even my work is to be done for Jesus, just like the entirety of my daily walk must be. This is my failing, and this is what I know I will correct. My work will be done for Jesus.
Prayer: Lord, this is my decision and my commitment. I will perform my vocation for your glory. I am now in need of that vocation. I seek it, and I desire it. My family needs it. Please, Lord, do not allow your faithful to suffer or be put to shame. I desire to do your work, not as I failed before. Amen.
