Understanding Both What and How

Scripture: But now that there is no more place for me to work in these regions, and since I have been longing for many years to visit you, I plan to do so when I go to Spain. I hope to see you while passing through and to have you assist me on my journey there, after I have enjoyed your company for a while. Now, however, I am on my way to Jerusalem in the service of the Lord’s people there. Romans 15:23-25

Observation: At this writing, this is Paul's plan: Go to Jerusalem, delivery the offering from Macedonia, then go to Spain, visiting Rome along the way. Paul will never make it to Spain. He will spend his time in Jerusalem pursued and persecuted, and he will arrive in Rome not as a visiting traveler but as a prisoner in chains to be tried by Caesar.

In all of this, Paul has clearly expressed what his life's mission is about. He is a teacher to the Gentiles, telling those who do not know God through Judaism the good news about salvation through faith in Jesus. He also knows he is to go to Rome, the center of the western world. He just doesn't know how all this will happen. He has a plan, and God has a plan. God's always wins out.

Application: Today, I know better than to make a plan for my life. Well ... sometimes I know better. I still think about what I could or should do next in life, but I now know that the plan is just an outline. I need to pray asking for God to reveal his overall objective for my life - soon, or in a next phase, or long term - and then see how I can live into that objective. The path I determine may be right, but it also may not. And it doesn't really matter.

Prayer: Lord, I thank you for my future, whatever it may hold. I know that it will include your love, provision, and company, and that is enough for me. I do ask for understanding of the objective, but I will walk on your path no matter what. Please be with me along the way, guiding me gently. Amen.

David's Line is Alive and Well

Scripture:
Lord, where is your former great love,
    which in your faithfulness you swore to David?
Remember, Lord, how your servant has been mocked,
    how I bear in my heart the taunts of all the nations,
the taunts with which your enemies, Lord, have mocked,
    with which they have mocked every step of your anointed one.
Psalm 89:49-51

Observation: The psalmist of Psalm 89 has been lamenting the downfall of Israel, and explicitly focused on the Lord's covenant with David, which is that the line of David will exist as a royal line forever. However, Israel and Judah are now nearing destruction, so the hope is that this will not occur due to the promise of David.

God's servant - the children of Israel - have been mocked, humiliated, and defeated as divine punishment. However, the Lord's promises are to be trusted. Therefore, even as the enemy mocks the people and even the anointed leader, there is hope. Israel must still believe that, somehow, the Lord will provide the way for his steadfast promise to be fulfilled.

Application: Today, we discussed the current state of affairs in Ashdod, Israel, where the Jews are actively fighting against the church of Jesus. We also read in Romans how Paul understands the promise of Messiah being for the Gentiles, for while some Jews have believed the good news many have not. And I wonder ... how can this be? How can the Jews fervently pray for and believe in the promise of the Messianic king, and then actively and aggressively reject the Messianic king? And repeat both of those behaviors for thousands of years?

Such is the way of faith, that those who actively seek it can simultaneously aggressively reject it. Those who wish with all they have for hope in their lives, then angrily fight against the source of hope. Those who desire a loving and peaceful society rail against the source of love and peace.

I pray for our society, and for our city, and for our region. I know the bible proves that many will reject any truth about Jesus. However, some will believe, and our hope and work needs to be offering more and more people that opportunity to believe.

Rumors of the failure of Davidic covenant are greatly exaggerated. The line of David is alive and well, sitting on his throne, at the right had of Yahweh, Lord of all creation.

Prayer: Lord, may we all find the strength to pronounce your good news. The news was always that salvation is available through Messiah, no more and no less. May that news be both whispered in streets and shouted from the rooftops in Ashdod, and Seattle, and the ends of the earth. Amen.

Your Grace Holds Me Now

I have spent so much time in the last year praying for God's help in my current situation, that I have almost forgot where he found me in the first place. It is only by the Lord, and his grace through Jesus, that I am ... even alive today, I know. I should have had a disastrous, terrible life, and died young and alone and unloved. Instead, I have been blessed without merit, forgiven without reason, upheld without cause, sustained without strength, loved without worth.

Lifted up
And my knees know it's all for your glory,
That I might stand
With more reason to sing than to fear.

You pulled me from the clay,
Set me on a rock,
Called me by your name,
And made my heart whole again.

Continuing in a Dark Place

Scripture: And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. Romans 13:11

Observation: In providing instructions for living to the Romans, he discusses the "present time" ... that they live in a time when the world is changing with regards to Christ. In this, he encourages them that salvation is closer now than when they first believed in Jesus. This could mean three things:

1) The return of Jesus
2) Their deaths and just salvation to eternal life in heaven
3) The general legalization of Christianity in the Roman world

It is true all three are closer, just through the passage of time. However, I believe Paul meant the third option, as he has been telling them how to live publicly. He has been advising them to respect Roman authority, pay taxes, give respect to leaders, etc. In these things, he is teaching them how to live public lives of faith ... telling them they have the ability to live in the open as both Romans and Christians, as the two are not mutually exclusive.

Application: This - the ability to live openly as a Christian within our society - wasn't even a thought several years ago, but now is again an issue. My wife and I have discussed the difficulty of being Christian in this part of the world, as it relates to how others then treat us in social and professional contexts. To an extent, this is exactly what was on my mind about 30 minutes ago, as I realized others change their conversations and even lie to me simply because they know I'm Christian and thus they presume things about me.

I have said that persecution and trouble is ahead for Christians, and I have lived within that persecution to various degrees already. It will get worse in this part of the world. And again, that is nothing new. The Roman church lived this way, and tried to find a way to live as both Christians and Romans. Today, I must find a way to live as both Christian a Seattleite, demonstrating public faith in a region where Christianity might be just the fourth of fifth belief system, and both openly and implicitly mocked by public officials and policy.

However, as Paul points out, salvation is nearer, not further away. I am not to hide, but live as a citizen, employee, community member ... and active believer.

Prayer: Lord, may my light shine for all to see. Please be with your church and with your faithful in this dark place, as it gets darker every day. We know that the darkness cannot overcome the light, as long as our light shines among men. Please help us all stay strong. Amen.

Embracing a Life of Destiny

Scripture: Their fellow Levites were assigned to all the other duties of the tabernacle, the house of God. But Aaron and his descendants were the ones who presented offerings on the altar of burnt offering and on the altar of incense in connection with all that was done in the Most Holy Place, making atonement for Israel, in accordance with all that Moses the servant of God had commanded. 1 Chronicles 6:48-49

Observation: In documenting the lineages of Levi, the historian documents those with the functions of priest and musicians. God had declared the Levites would serve the needs of the tabernacle, which David and Solomon later extended to the temple, and the priestly line would come from Aaron. There are two lists of priestly lines - one is 22 names long, the other 11 - and it appears the shorter list is perhaps a pre-Davidic list.

These people ... did not have a choice of profession. It may be true that the high priest was such a grand position they would have never wanted to choose anything else, but the point is they didn't get the option. They were the line that would serve, and from birth it was their destiny and design.

Likewise, in Romans 12 Paul encourages a similar attitude with life ... to make our lives a living sacrifice. Effectively, this means to wholly submit to whatever will and plan God has for us, surrendering any self-actualized decision, and simply doing what God has intended for us. This especially manifests in the Church, with whatever gifts we have being absolutely what we should do for the good of the body of Christ. However, it must also apply to all aspects of life. Our "living sacrifice" is to live in the position God - not us - has decided we should live.

Application: I am learning how to live this way ... in the place and position of God's choosing. I have no idea if I am there yet, and that is probably the most difficult part. I can come to grips with the idea that I must not pursue my own ambitions and designs. However, it is hard when I do not get confirmation that I am living within God's design.

Am I in the right place? Am I doing the right things? Am I caring for my family and others as God intends? If I knew the answers were yes, yes, and yes, then I would have no concerns.

The Levites knew they were doing the right things. Paul knew he was doing the right thing. I hope I am doing the right thing, and if I am not I would love to just be guided and told where to go without the pain this time.

Prayer: Lord, I seek only your will for my life, and for my daily walk. That is sincerely all I want. I submit to you, confident that if I live within your perfect will I will indeed find peace and joy and love. I know this to be true. Please provide confirmation. And please do so gently. Amen.

Love and the Promise

Scripture:
I will sing of the Lord’s great love forever;
    with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known
    through all generations.
I will declare that your love stands firm forever,
    that you have established your faithfulness in heaven itself.
You said, "I have made a covenant with my chosen one,
    I have sworn to David my servant,
'I will establish your line forever
    and make your throne firm through all generations.'"
Psalm 89:1-4

Observation: The psalmist declares they will sing of the Lord, and sing of his great love. This is a love that is faithful to all generations, stands firm forever, and is established in all creation, not just within one nation but in all the world and even in heaven itself.

And what is that love? It is ... the Davidic covenant to bring Messiah into the world. God's love is the promise of an eternal savior-king who will establish an eternal throne. The lords love is the promise of salvation, available through the person of Messiah, which once established will be available to everyone forever.

Application: Today, I sit in a place and time where I receive the benefit of God's promise. This is a blessing beyond anything on earth I could ask or receive, and it is this context that I should consider all other aspects of my very existence. I - sinful, unworthy, dishonest, mean, and arrogant - have received God's love through Jesus Christ.

This very morning I prayed to God about how I could place elements of life in proper perspective. Within 30 minutes, he has shown me the proper perspective. My life is meaningless outside of this promise ... the eternal king Jesus is established as the Messiah, and I receive eternal life by living in faith of that fact. This I do and claim, and thank the Lord for his love and mercy.

Prayer: Lord, my father in heaven, you are great and glorious and amazing. Your love and mercy and compassion and wisdom are beyond measure. Today and every day, I praise you and only you, for only you are worthy of praise and honor. I will sing of your great love forever. Amen.

Becoming Truly More than a Conqueror

Scripture: No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. Romans 8:37

Observation: Paul asks seven questions, some rhetorical and expounded upon by other questions, but he is making his great point here. The core question is this - Can anyone really defeat believers? He wonders who can be against us when we have such a powerful and giving God. He wonders who can condemn us, who can separate us from God's love, who can bring trouble and hardships on us, and who can endanger us.

And this is the answer ... no one. Nothing anyone does can separate us from the love of God, and from the blessing of his salvation, through our faith in - and the love of - Jesus Christ.

Application: I am tired of dwelling on the circumstances of the past year, and actively seeking peace and joy for my future. It is clear from Paul that to do this I need to really know and understand two things. First, the world CAN, in fact, threaten us. The evil world - and those doing the bidding of the world - can threaten our livelihood, health, and very lives. Paul knew this ... he was in chains being taken to Rome for trial when he wrote this!

However, the second point is that this doesn't matter. All that matters is my relationship with God, found through my Lord Jesus Christ. With this, all else is SO secondary in importance that it really isn't to be considered as part of life at all. The only thing is life that matters is the love and joy, grace, mercy, judgment, and blessing of God. This is the only source of peace and joy, and all else is simply the useless world.

This is where and when I will find joy ... when I turn my full attention to the Lord, and turn away from all aspects of earthly existence. I need to ignore human judgment, human values, and earthly definitions of success and happiness.

I am approaching this. When I find this, I will be more than a conqueror, as Paul indicates. I will fully take my place as a truly adopted son.

Prayer: Lord, it is to you I look, this day and every day. May I fully set aside all earthly perspectives, and fully embrace your kingdom, your guidance, and your precepts. Amen.

Seeking a Spirit-Filled Life

Scripture: For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. Romans 8:3-4

Observation: Paul ended the prior chapter stating that the law effectively created sin, but teaching what sin was and then our weak human nature desiring to do what was now forbidden. Now he explains the outcome of that ... they law was weakened by our weakness, so Jesus provides both the sacrifice for redemption and the Holy Spirit so we may live in the Spirit instead of the flesh.

The flesh - our earthly selves - will always fail. However, reliance on the Holy Spirit will always prevail, and faith in Jesus will always sanctify us. It is by this, Paul states, that we must live ... the Holy Spirit is our way of life. Living in the Spirit provides us with the strength and will to live according to God's wishes, and the faith to receive forgiveness when we stumble. Living an earthly life according to the flesh is a life hostile toward God himself. In doing this, people are opposed to God himself.

Application: Paul's instructions are confusing, but partly because he constructs long arguments and he has been setting this one up for several chapters. Paul himself cannot avoid sin. The law, designed to teach holy living, instead only points out our guilt when we fail to live according to it, because in our very nature we cannot live a holy life. Therefore, our only hope to live as God has designed is to rely upon the Holy Spirit within us, provided through faith in Jesus, who has also sacrificed himself for the forgiveness of our sins.

It is this 'living in the Spirit' that I yearn for most, and believe is most missing from my faith. There are times I feel the Holy Spirit ... but just a bit. I want more! I truly want to surrender myself to the Holy Spirit and submit to the Lord in my daily walk. I know the major issue in this is not God, but me. I cling to control and my own will instead of surrendering as I should. As Paul said, I do what I hate. I so wish this would change within my heart.

Prayer: Come, Holy Spirit. Amen.

Keeping the Lord Central

Scripture: For I desire mercy, not sacrifice,
    and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings.
Hosea 6:6

Observation: Jesus quotes the first half of this passage to the Pharisees, telling them to research what it means. Even out of context, it seems obvious. The Lord was never about desiring legalistic compliance with rituals and procedures, but about relationship and communion through time, attention, and interaction. God wished, for example, that people would demonstrate love and compassion, and therefore engage with the Lord with joy rather than with a simple process of killing an animal and moving on. God wanted the Israelites to simply declare him as the Lord of all the earth, instead of performing the ritual of the morning offering and moving along in their lives as if that was just something they had to do, like brushing their teeth.

Application: I must be careful not to allow anything concerning the Lord to just become a ritual. Not ... going to church on Sundays, or saying prayers before meals. I need to pay special attention to God, not because he asks it, but because he is the Lord and is due my attention and my intentionality.

The Lord desires my love for others, not the money I simply hand over to pay for the church to help others. He wishes I would declare him Lord and God, not to mindlessly sing songs I have memorized.

This concept - one sentence in a book of a 'minor prophet' - was so central to God's heart that Jesus quoted it in one of his most direct statements to the Pharisees. Then I should use its lesson to guard my ways and ensure I am not like them.

Prayer: Lord, you are central to my life, though there are times I may not behave or think that way. May I keep you central in all things, and sincerely acknowledge and worship you in my daily walk. I desire to be mindful, intentional, and missional. Amen.

On Becoming a Jew

Scripture: No, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a person’s praise is not from other people, but from God. Romans 2:29

Observation: As Paul begins to dive into the meat of his message, he begins to position the 'salvation by faith' discussion by first assessing what it means to be a Jew. A Jew, as he points out, is a person who has received the law - the very word of God - and observes it. In contrast, someone who knows the law and still breaks it is arguably not a Jew. They may be outwardly circumcised, but their hearts are not right. Even if they can quote the law and teach it to others, without at least attempting to comply they are under condemnation and their Jewish standing has no bearing.

Therefore, someone who may not be outwardly a Jew by nationality, but yet knows and follows the law ... this is a person whose heart has been circumcised by the Spirit. They are above those who are the opposite. They are even ... a Jew, and are worthy of praise from God.

Application: I am not a Jew by nationality or genetics, however I would gladly call myself a Jew by adoption through faith in Jesus, understanding the word of God, and attempts to comply with his law. Do I succeed at this last item, complying with the law? No, I fail every day. And that is why the first two elements, especially faith in Jesus, come into play ... to provide for grace and forgiveness, so I may be clean before God.

I wish my internal heart were softer and more obviously inwardly circumcised. I want there to be clear and obvious evidence in my life that I am a Jew by the Spirit. The Jews are people set apart to be different as a nation of priests, and blessed to be a blessing to others. Were that to be said of me.

Prayer: Lord, this day I know I am one of your people, a believer in the Lord almighty, who strives to know your word and is found innocent by faith in Jesus. I am a Jew inwardly. May I find ways in this world, in this time, to fulfill that mission. Amen.

Something Important is Missing

Scripture: As the Lord had declared, Nebuchadnezzar removed the treasures from the temple of the Lord and from the royal palace, and cut up the gold articles that Solomon king of Israel had made for the temple of the Lord. ... The Babylonians broke up the bronze pillars, the movable stands and the bronze Sea that were at the temple of the Lord and they carried the bronze to Babylon. They also took away the pots, shovels, wick trimmers, dishes and all the bronze articles used in the temple service. The commander of the imperial guard took away the censers and sprinkling bowls—all that were made of pure gold or silver. 2 Kings 24:14; 25:13-15

Observation: Others have wondered about this forever, but ... where is the Ark of the Covenant?

In the timeline of the kings of Judah, we are less than 100 years removed from Hezekiah laying out his prayers before the ark, and within 10 years of Josiah reinstituting all temple worship. The ark had to be ... somewhere. And certainly if shovels and wick trimmers are worth mentioning, the ark being removed would have been worth a comment.

That said, the second removal of items listed in 2 Kings 25 is well after the first events, and it is (I believe) after Ezekiel sees the image of God departing on his throne from his exile in Babylon. There are all kinds of ideas where the ark is today, but there is a possibility it simply left with God. Though even its absence would seem noteworthy, perhaps in the time of distress the historical record is vague due to distress, not purpose.

Application: God is mysterious in so many ways, and the ark remains one of those deep mysteries to me. It was a symbol of course, as certainly he did not 'live' on top of the box. However, at the same time, it was a symbol he desired and provided to give Israel a center ... a place to meet him.

There are those who believe it is lost forever. There are those who think it is in a small church in Ethiopia. There are those who believe it is hidden and will be discovered as a key to the end-times. All I think is ... it wasn't there when Jerusalem fell, because God will never been taken by any human authority. He is all powerful and in control, on his heavenly throne.

Prayer: Abba, you are a mystery to all of us, and that is as it should be. We strive to understand you, but certainly that should not be a goal of ours, rather we should honor, worship, and obey you. May I do these things daily. Amen.

A Model Famous Church

Scripture: First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being reported all over the world. Romans 1:8

Observation: Paul has never been to Rome, and never met or spoken with any Christian in Rome, yet here he is introducing himself and announcing his future trip to Rome this way ... he already thanks God for them because their faith is world-renowned. As a church, they are literally rock-star famous for their faith!! Paul has been all over the Greek world, and he has heard of the faith of the church of Rome already, everywhere.

Application: Today, I am reminded of - and thank God for - churches today that are just like this. I start with ... the church in Rome, the Vatican! The catholic church remains an influence worldwide, and when strong and honest is a tremendous light for the gospel.

Personally, I am most influenced by Gateway Church in Dallas, whose sermons I now watch regularly for their deeper understanding of God's word. I know our congregation is also well supported by New Life in Colorado Springs.

There are so many other "world famous" churches that pour their resources outward to help and encourage others ... Elevation, Life Church, Hillsong, just to name three. Some of these churches export their worship music, some publicize the good news in their messages, and some afford their pastors the time to reach and serve others. The common theme is this: These churches us their resources to bless others, rather than hording the great teaching, music, and inspiration for themselves.

Evergreen is probably "Bothell-famous", and that's great. This is where and what we need to be, and it is critical we keep that focus as God calls us to be the light of our community.

Prayer: Lord, you have granted Evergreen with a special mission in Bothell, and given us favor that can only come from you. We are known to all our some town, through Christmas celebration, Independence Day service, city and commercial partnership, community connections and cultural events, and support of regional organizations. Let's turn this light up to 11. I pray into the goal of establishing your lighthouse in downtown, and becoming "Bothell's church". I pray again for the claiming of Bothell. I expect we will very soon face huge opposition, because I feel we are close to an amazing breakthrough season. Please give us your strength, completely for your glory. Amen.

Have I Not Heard?

Scripture:
Have you not heard?
    Long ago I ordained it.
In days of old I planned it;
    now I have brought it to pass,
that you have turned fortified cities
    into piles of stone.
2 Kings 19:25

Observation: As, through the prophet Isaiah, God rebukes the king of Assyria, this is his explanation. Yes, Assyria has overthrown many other nations, but only because that was God's plan all along. Had Assyria not heard? God planned all of this years and years ago. God chose to remove the other nations from the earth, and Assyria was simply his instrument. God brought all this to pass.

That the king of Assyria did not know this has no bearing on the truth. That he believed in his own might did not change the Lord actions. However, that he now proclaims blasphemy against the Lord ... that's a different matter.

God knows everything about the king of Assyria ... where he is, what he is doing, and what he is saying, even at that very moment (v27). In taking action, God won't need some other foreign power to rise up, and he won't even need Jerusalem to successfully defend itself, but instead he simply kill 180,000 soldiers that very night and thus drive off the king of Assyria in humility and fear.

Application: Have I not heard? The Lord is in complete control!! His plans are secure!

Have I not heard? There is nothing that happens for which he is surprised, or unable to address, or concerned about how someone may mock him when they feel proud of their triumph over his people.

Have I not heard? The evil may even appear to have success, but that is only earthly success and is done with a design and purpose understood and established by the Lord himself.

Have I not heard? The Lord has even set the timing of correction for those who do not trust in him, those who openly mock him. He can take care of that situation when he chooses to no longer endure their blasphemy.

I have heard.

Prayer: Lord, even this morning you reminded me of Shalom. My peace is not in a restful life, but rather it is found in total confidence of your control, might, wisdom, and love. I lose sight of that in so many moments, but not in a general sense of my life. I surrender to your plan, knowing that it is good and with an awesome long-term outcome established long ago. Amen.

Looking Back from the Other Side

I can see, I can see
How you delivered me.
In your hands and your feet
I found my victory.

So forever I am thankful for the scars.

Complying with Inaction

Scripture: They rejected his decrees and the covenant he had made with their ancestors and the statutes he had warned them to keep. They followed worthless idols and themselves became worthless. They imitated the nations around them although the Lord had ordered them, "Do not do as they do." 2 Kings 17:15

Observation: This is the epitaph of the northern kingdom of Israel ... they became worthless. This was obviously building for a very long time, but in the end in just happens with a bit of a whimper as the Assyrian king - to whom they were already subject - takes over the region and exiles the people. The author reviews the acts of the people of Israel that led to this punishment, and it all comes back to just one thing, which is worshiping other gods.

There is an issue of non-compliance with the commands of God that can seem troubling when one views those commands as orders. However, most of the commands are not such, but rather they are warnings about doing things that actually cause issues in our lives. Even "worship no other god" isn't a call to action, but rather just a call to not doing something else. This is the one thing Israel couldn't do ... it couldn't not worship other gods.

There were a lot of things Israel should have done. There was really one important thing they were commanded not to do. They did it, and Judah is next.

Application: Complying with God's desires for my life really comes down to this one idea, which is to not do things that are bad for me and for others. In this, I can then fill my time with good things, such as prayer, meditating on the word, and kind acts toward others.

Why is this SO hard for all of us? It must be again a matter of pride, or at least a willful act to do as we please regardless of known consequences, be they supernatural or just simply the likely outcomes of the world.

Obedience toward God begins by not doing the things God would not have me do. With that understood, doing good in the world and loving others seems like something that would simply fill the time in life.

As a people - be that defined as my family, my extended friends, my church, my region, my country, the universal Church, or mankind - this is the lesson we must learn, or else we will become worthless go the Lord. This is the one condition I never wish for.

Prayer: Lord, may I bring some value, however small it may be, to your kingdom this day and every day. In this, I desire to avoid those things that you would not have me do, and those thoughts you would not have me entertain. I again ask for your help, as I am mortal and weak in the flesh. Amen.

From Whence to Seek the Lord

Scripture: The king replied, "If the Lord does not help you, where can I get help for you? From the threshing floor? From the winepress?' 2 Kings 6:27

Observation: The king of Israel has continuously lead the people of Israel into idol worship. He remains of a mind that the Lord is simply one of the gods. His logic is that worshiping all the gods must be better than worshiping just one ... he likes to 'cover his bases' in this. While he may return to the Lord for urgent matters, it is this lack of commitment that is leading to the destruction of Israel.

In this matter, he often lays the ultimate decisions at the feet of the Lord. In this case, he outright tells a woman that, if the Lord himself won't help her in this famine, certainly he cannot. There is then irony in the places he names as where he cannot find help. The winepress is often a metaphor for God's place of judgment. A former threshing floor is, in fact, exactly where the temple is built in Jerusalem.

So where cannot the king turn for help? He cannot turn to the seat and presence of the Lord, as his sins without repentance leave him in a state where he cannot find a way to communicate with God. He cannot turn to the judgment before the Lord, for he is worthy not of grace but of ultimate judgment.

Application: Where can I find help? I can find help in the name of Jesus. Despite my sins, I can claim faith in Jesus, and thus receive the grace to come before the Lord with my prayers, and to stand in judgment washed clean. This is, as a well know, not something I deserve. It is only by God's love and mercy that any of this is true.

I do not worship any other god, yet my pride causes me to stumble in other areas. I am in need of grace, for I am not worthy on my own of mercy. I will seek the Lord - daily and continually - in the name of Jesus, for that is the only way I can find my way to the threshing floor, or survive the winepress.

Prayer: Lord, today I pray in the name of Jesus and by my faith in your son. Please forgive me of my sins. Remove evil thoughts from my mind and from before my mind's eye. I desire to seek only your instruction and precepts. Thank you for your grace, love, and mercy. Amen.

Opposed but Prepared

Scripture: So do what we tell you. There are four men with us who have made a vow. Take these men, join in their purification rites and pay their expenses, so that they can have their heads shaved. Then everyone will know there is no truth in these reports about you, but that you yourself are living in obedience to the law. Acts 21:23-34

Observation: Upon his return to Jerusalem, Paul is greeted by the elders with news that many believing Jews have heard a lie the Paul is teaching Jews to ignore the laws of Moses. This isn't true - he teaches Gentiles that they are not bound by the same law but rather by the teaching of Jesus (who supported the law - and the elders know Paul is innocent. To demonstrate the truth, they advise Paul to perform the purification rites required by the law. This will show everyone that Paul himself honors the law and therefore teaches no wrong thing to other Jews.

Paul will wash in prescriptive ways, shave his head, and dress in a manner that indicates he is in a period of repentance. This act will likely leave Paul ... very Roman in appearance. He will not appear as a Pharisee, if he did before, with traditional hair and beard and robes. It is in this state of appearance he will be arrested and presented to various Romans for trial, and eventually sent off to Rome.

Returning to Jerusalem, Paul immediately faces minor internal opposition from within the church. To address this, he takes actions that prepare him for major external opposition from the most powerful authority on earth.

Application: Paul was always prepared to give a response to questions about his belief, regardless of the source of those questions. HIs appearance and behavior, it seems, was also part of that prepared state. So how am I prepared to address others in my daily walk?

I do wish I wore a cross so I could identify more openly as Christian at work. I don't own one, and feel strange beginning that custom at my age, but perhaps I should. This may also help me prepare for daily discussions, reminding me physically of whose I am.

Prayer: Lord, Paul was always ready, even when he didn't actually know yet that he needed to get ready. This is certainly because he was open and available to your instructions as they came to him. May I be open as well, and may I better seek and receive your instructions from various sources. Amen.

Feeling All the Feels

Scripture: He replied, "I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too." 1 Kings 19:14

Observation: Twice the Lord asks Elijah what he is doing at Mount Horeb, and twice Elijah provides the exact same answer. In between, the Lord presents some truth to Elijah, in the form of power and presence. The Lord exhibits mighty wind, destructive fire, and a great earthquake, yet he is "not in" those things. Instead, the Lord is the gentle, kind, safe whisper that comes after the terrors.

Elijah answer the question the same both before and after this lesson might indicate he didn't understand. On the other hand, it might simply indicate that this, indeed, why he is where he is. It isn't that it was wrong to be here - God even fed him in order to make the journey here - but that the 'here' of his state of mind is distressed. Elijah has completely fled Israel in both fear and frustration. Even if he learns the lesson of fear ... that God is powerful enough to deal with any situation yet loves Elijah tenderly, and thus he need not fear ... he is still frustrated with the fact that Israel has turned its back on the Lord.

God will, of course, provide Elijah with new instructions, which include a path forward for the future, information that indicates there is still hope as some people have not turned away, and even insight into the punishment that he is preparing for those who have. God addressed Elijah's fear with his might and his love, and then addressed his frustration with his plan and demonstrated control.

Application: When I have been afraid for my future, I find that the emotion of fear is never an isolated emotion. Every time, I am also ... angry, frustrated, confused, disappointed, and/or saddened.

I have always seen myself in Elijah in this passage. I do not have Elijah's faith - not by a long shot - but I have his emotions. I picture him yelling at God when first asked why he is there. It's one of those "Were you not just paying attention!?" responses. He's done all he can, performed the most amazing miracles, all in God's name and following God's direct instructions, and as a result nothing has improved except he's not being hunted by the queen. However, when he responds the second time, he is just ... exhausted. Nothing has really changed, but he now understands he cannot direct any of his emotions at the Lord, so instead he is simply laying open his soul. He has done what God asked, and if that didn't work in leading the people to repentance then he just wants to give up.

I have thought long and hard about giving up. There are so many things in this life that just seem so pointless. There is service and work provided by God that doesn't produce any results. There is daily living that is simply tiring. There are threats to personal security that have no reason and cause fear and depression.

In these, I understand the Lord is in control. He could fight back, but instead he is likely to simply give me the next set of tasks, which may or may not meet with better success than the past. My responsibility is to do it. I can express my emotions to the Lord ... he might even want to hear them, since he asked Elijah twice ... but in the end the response that will matter is simply to act in love toward others.

Prayer: Lord, I do have the emotions of Elijah, especially with all the bad ways those manifest. May I also always have the heart to serve you and your created. I set aside desires for your mighty response to the evil of this world, and instead I seek your whispered instructions. Amen.

The Wisdom of Godly Crowds

Scripture:
Plans fail for lack of counsel,
    but with many advisers they succeed.
Proverbs 15:22

Observation: This proverb is straightforward with 'wisdom of crowds' advice. A person who makes decision on their own is likely to make bad decisions and poor plans, however someone who consults many others is likely to end up with a good consensus that will succeed. Of course, their is an unstated implication. The one who acts without any advice is also choosing to not seek the advice of the Lord, while the one who seeks many advisers should be consulting those people who are in prayer with God, and thus several may hear a consistent word of the Lord. It is this that produces the wise decision and direction ... the direction of God, confirmed by many others.

Application: We know that the "wisdom of crowds" works in matters of objective decision making ... when presents with alternatives, a the consensus of a large crowd is more likely to be correct than the choice of even the best-informed expert deciding alone. This proverb indicates this was a known concept thousands of years ago.

For me, this then implies two actions. First, I must be in community with others with whom I would confide in decisions. I am so very isolated in life, and I should change that. I need friends - even just good confidants who I trust - if I am to make good decisions about life. Second, I need those people to be individuals who will pray and seek the word of the Lord about my life. Since I struggle to hear good and clear direction, I need to place trust in others.

Prayer: Lord, you have placed me in a community at my church, but I continue to struggle to be close to others. May I find a place with them where I can trust, and where I can confide. Only in this way will I be able to find good future directions, aligned to your path for my life. Amen.

A Clear and Obvious Violation

Scripture: After seeking advice, the king made two golden calves. He said to the people, "It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Here are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt." 1 Kings 12:28

Observation: As Jeroboam strives to secure the northern kingdom of Israel, he creates two temples with matching golden calves. He instructs the people to worship these instead of going to the temple in Jerusalem, in order to prevent his people from developing loyalty to Judah.

This is, quite clearly, a violation of God's commands. Even the instructions given - worship these golden calves as the god who brought you out of Egypt - are the exact instructions for which the Israelites were punished when being brought out of Egypt 500 years previously. And they ALL should have known it. Therefore, the only way the people agreed to do this is because either a) they didn't care about the truth about God and his instructions for their lives, or b) they believed God's instructions changed and adjusted with the times, and now that the nation was divided it made sense to have a new system or worship to align to the national structure.

Application: We discuss often the idea the God does not change. As a church, we need to be very careful that we therefore understand God's instructions, because they remain the same. Of course, worshiping idols is terrible ... I worship only God, and he is not represented by any man-made image. Worshiping idols is a clear violation of God's instructions.

Are there behaviors I have, however, that I have embraced as believing they are perfectly okay and which likewise should be obvious violations of God's will, precepts, laws, and commands? I know society in general has done this; of that fact there is no disputing, and there will come a time when our nation and people will be judged for this behavior I have no doubt. That said, it is important that I, along with other believers, remain different and in alignment to God's ways. We are to learn and study what God has said.

I may be closest to danger when I worry about money, and when I judge others. Both of these demonstrate a potential issue ... either lack of faith, or lack of love, and involve prideful self-worship. These things must be avoided. I do not believe I do anything as obvious as Jeroboam initiated, but I must be aware. I love the Lord, and honestly seek to do his will as my act of worship.

Prayer: Lord, may I be ever looking to you for the proper direction and behaviors in my life. I know I sin, and I seek your forgiveness for those sins. Please do forgive me. I do not wish to ever offend you, and want to better know your true instructions for my life. You are the only one I worship, ever. May I seek your face this day. Amen.

Upon Being Invited to Engage

Scripture: After the reading from the Law and the Prophets, the leaders of the synagogue sent word to them, saying, "Brothers, if you have a word of exhortation for the people, please speak." Acts 13:15

Observation: Upon the Sabbath reading of scripture, the synagogue leaders - rabbis and Pharisees likely - extend a specific invitation to Paul and Barnabas to speak. Paul steps forward, and begins what I believe is his first recorded Gospel message ... the good news of Jesus, tied directly to old testament prophesy.

It is interesting to see that the message began as an invitation to speak. Paul did not force himself on others, and he did not make himself obnoxious in order to promote his mission, and he did not bellow above the Jewish leaders who were likely teaching a more standard message that day. Paul listened to where these people were at this moment. He saw that they included both Jews and believing Gentiles who therefore were possibly still learning to understand God's past lessons. He waited until he was called upon. Only then did Paul bring forward the most greatest news of all time.

Application: How am I to tell others of Jesus during my daily activities? Paul's example would be this. First observe what others think about life, and their general belief in God. Second, wait to be called upon. Third, speak a clear and direct message about Jesus, tied back to the understanding the listener has about life.

The Church doesn't generally do any of these well. We impose our understanding of God onto situations, pronounce judgments as if they were a welcome understanding of God, and challenge others to listen to our truth. All of that is fine ... we do bring the truth, there is urgency in the message, and all of us are under judgment without faith. However, there is clearly an option.

Paul had stored within him 15 years of waiting to preach on a mission trip. Once in the setting, he understood he could wait a couple hours more, but he was also ready with a positive method for engaging. As always, his is an example to emulate.

Prayer: Today, Lord, I wonder when and how I should act to bring your message into this workplace. I know no one is going to walk up to my desk and ask me to start a bible study. However, I will also look for other types of invitations. And I will be ready, by your Spirit, as you will. Amen.

Three Relative Unknowns

Scripture: Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul. While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them." So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off. Acts 13:1-3

Observation: As the church in Antioch has thrived, it is said there are good men there leading it. Saul (Paul) and Barnabas are then set aside - along with Mark as an assistant - and sent on a new mission work.

Even non-Christians have heard of Paul and Mark, and many will gladly tour places named after them to this day. Barnabas is known by Christians. However, most of us have never thought twice about Niger, Lucius, and Manaen. These are three men who simply, obediently, led one of the most important churches in the history of the world. They were at the epicenter of the early church movement, and may even have been the ones fully leading the effort as Barnabas and Paul both came after the church was functional and then left. In addition, we have no record to letters written by Paul to this church, meaning that - perhaps - he was confident in the leadership that they never required his guidance.

Niger, Lucius, and Manaen are names that perhaps we should know. Then again, God did know them, and that is likely the point ... they served for God's glory, not theirs, and thus it doesn't matter who might recall their names two thousand years later.

Application: I continue to struggle with pride. I find that the mistakes are make are mistakes of pride, based on immediate selfishness and/or self-centered thoughts. I consider myself as someone who should be able to self-direct my decisions, and then do so. Even my sloth is based on the idea that maybe I should be doing something else, and thus do not focus on where I am now.

These three men I've never heard of need to instruct and inform me. They were where they were set by God, given instructions, and 'sentenced' to historical obscurity. From there, they likely influenced the world for Jesus more than almost anyone else in history ... and few if any know it.

Who knows what God could do if I would simply place him first in my life, and serve his properly where I am? It could be that, in the end, no one would still know, and that would be ideal.

Prayer: Lord, today again I set aside pride. I wish to tear that vile weed out of my soul, and give to you my softened, open, and loving heart. My actions, my every action, should reflect only your will and your love. May I do that this day and every day. Amen.

Seeking Reward is Betrayal

Scripture: When the news reached Joab, who had conspired with Adonijah though not with Absalom, he fled to the tent of the Lord and took hold of the horns of the altar. King Solomon was told that Joab had fled to the tent of the Lord and was beside the altar. Then Solomon ordered Benaiah son of Jehoiada, "Go, strike him down!" 1 Kings 2:28-29

Observation: Joab is a confusing character in the kingship of David. He is David's military commander and seeming right-hand in almost all conflicts. Yet he also disobeys David repeatedly, in ways that greatly harm David. Joab kills others who are both loyal to David and ranking military officials, including Abner and Amasa, who are both ranking military officials (Amasa had even replaced Joab as commander of the army). He also kills Absalom against David's orders. Finally, in David's dying days, he chooses to support Adonijah over Solomon.

Joab loves is position and his power. When it aligns, this appears to actually represent a love of David as king. However, it becomes clear that is not the case. Joab does not often obey David, and in the end openly questions David's judgment. Instead, it is his own authority Joab loves. Joab serves the king, but in truth he only serves the king who in turn will provide him with authority. This means Joab really serves himself.

Application: This is a pitfall for all people, myself included - to potentially love God because of some position, capability, reward, or promise we expect as a result of that love. When we love God for some motive or reward, we are acting as Joab ... one who appears to have love, but who is actually self-serving and very likely to betray others.

My love for God and for Jesus must be just for them, and not for their promises. I do love them not for what they might do for me, but for what they have already done! They have already ... died for my sins, promised me salvation, provided for my very life, and bestowed undeserved love upon me and my family. It is for these I honor and love the Lord.

Prayer: Dear Abba, you are worthy of my love and praise for all you have done. May I not seek any reward, but instead simply serve you for what you have already done. Thank you. Amen.

I Know You Hear my Call

All of this time, and I've never let you down.
I carried you then. I'll carry you here and now.
So don't lose heart and don't forget,
My work in you ain't finished yet.
Hold onto me, now, I'll never let you down.

Accepting God's Truth

Scripture: This is the same Moses they had rejected with the words, ‘Who made you ruler and judge?’ He was sent to be their ruler and deliverer by God himself, through the angel who appeared to him in the bush. Acts 7:35

Observation: As Stephen continues his account of Moses' history, he provides this explanation about two details. He has shown that the Israelites rejected Moses as their ruler, but that now God himself has appointed Moses as their ruler. He goes on to show that it was Moses himself who declared that another like him will someday come to lead the people, and further demonstrates that Israel has a history of rejecting the Lord and the warnings of the prophets.

In other words, Stephen is clearly stating that declaring Jesus as Messiah is not opposed to the law of Moses, but rather the fulfillment of the law. He is also stating there is no wonder the Sanhedrin leadership is choosing to reject the truth Jesus, for it was actually the Jews who rejected Moses as their deliverer in Egypt and then rejected his teaching and laws themselves.

Stephen stands accused of rejecting the law of Moses by accepting Jesus. Stephen makes it clear that he accepts Jesus in order to fully embrace the laws and precepts of Moses. Furthermore, he accepts the prophesy of Moses, which the Jewish leaders are rejecting.

Application: I was considering "truth" yesterday again, from the perspective of what can absolutely be known as true. This question, in my mind, comes down to only one core tenant ... does a person believe in the sovereign Lord, God almighty, creator of heaven and earth? If so, then the word of God, and even the nature of the created universe, is a given truth to be used to evaluate all other facts. However, if not, then there can be no yardstick to create a common understanding of truth.

And that is when everyone creates their own truth. The Sanhedrin had done this - created their own truth - even in the context of God's law. By selecting the prescriptive ritualistic elements of that law, and rejecting the prophetic words throughout their scriptures, they had created a truth based on actions, and not based on faith.

I must not have "my" truth. Even if I think my thoughts align to God's word, I must not create a scenario where I select elements of God's word because they align to my worldview. I must instead settle on this one truth ... the Lord is the almighty God. I am grateful that he is a God of love who has provided a means to a relationship with him by faith in Jesus. However, all that means I must and will obey his commands and precepts. I must learn his word and listen to his instructions. I don't get to cherry-pick my favorite passages about love and provision and salvation and hope, but ignore those about compassion and sacrifice and prayer and honor.

There is a definitive truth, and it is only from that truth that all other aspects of the world should be considered. It is God's truth I must use as the lens through which I see and interact with the world and everyone in it, every day.

Prayer: Yahweh, you are the great and glorious Lord of heaven and earth. All honor, glory, worship, and praise are yours. May your words and precepts and commands be ever on my mind and on my lips and in my heart. This is the center of my life, and the core of my very existence, which you gave me in the first place. Praise be to your name forever and ever! Amen, and amen.

So Easily Swayed

Scripture: A messenger came and told David, "The hearts of the people of Israel are with Absalom." Then David said to all his officials who were with him in Jerusalem, "Come! We must flee, or none of us will escape from Absalom. We must leave immediately, or he will move quickly to overtake us and bring ruin on us and put the city to the sword." 2 Samuel 15:13-14

Observation: As the tide turns in the rebellion of Absalom against David, this message comes to David ... that the people of Israel are with Absalom. This is likely true only to a degree. We see "the whole countryside" wept as David retreated, yet we also see specific individuals like Shimei oppose David. It is doubtful the entire country now backs Absalom, but it is clear that enough do that the rebellion now has the potential of a civil war. It is for this reason - to spare everyone from fighting - that David flees.

And once again, we see that the people of Israel as so easily swayed by whatever trend may be coming there way this day. Having begged for a king and being shown the dangers of that, they have been given David, a man who has created the greatest period of peace and protection they have known in centuries. Yet when David's own son rebels, they are quick to cast David aside. Absalom has done nothing for them, and is even from David's line. There is no reason to oppose David other than it being a trendy thing to do ... and opposed to God's direction for Israel.

This is the common theme. Israel is easily turned against God's will for their nation, because they cannot find a way to discern God's will. They only have the law, which by now govern ritual behavior but fail to reveal God's love and direction. Following procedures without relationship produces a fickle nation of unstable faith.

Application: There are Christians who follow procedures, rules, and traditions. While these things can be good when applied in a manner that keeps one's attention focused on the Lord, they are stumbling blocks when they become the ends.

I must always ensure I am engaged with God in a manner that strengthens my relationship, service, and love, and not in a manner that simply ensure my compliance with policy. Process, habits, and compliance can help if I apply them properly. Ad hoc prayer and worship, while meditating on God's word through the Holy Spirit, is likely the best approach however.

Prayer: Lord, may I find your word this day, and meditate on it during my times of random mindlessness. It is by this way that I know I can grow in faith, and grow closer to you. I do not want to become as fickle and unstable as Israel was, but rather I wish to cling firm to your truth in both my actions and thoughts. Thank you for your patience and forgiveness when I struggle. Amen.

God's Mind-Blowing Corrections

Scripture: The Lord declares to you that the Lord himself will establish a house for you: When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom. He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. ... Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever. 2 Samuel 7:11b-13,16

Observation: We see David continually consult with God before taking action, and every conflict with enemies begins with him asking God if he should proceed. Yet this section begins with David deciding it is wrong that he has a nice house and God only has a tent. That night, God reveals something more through Nathan the prophet. David has himself considered building God a great house, and God responds with two specific messages.

-- David must not build the house of the Lord, but his son will.
-- The house of David will be established as an eternal kingdom.

In other words, in correcting David's thought process, the Lord reveals two amazing promises. The lesser of these is about the building of the temple, which effectively establishes Jerusalem as the spiritual center of the entire world ... which it is still to this day, with all the conflict, strife, hope, and passion that comes with that. The second promise is that Messiah will come from the line of David, and will establish an eternal kingdom.

David always consults God, and God tells him what to do. Then when David fails to do that and begins thinking on his own, God corrects him with the most amazing and improbable plan ever ... a way to redeem the entire world through this little, tiny, often wayward nation. If David had proceeded with building a temple, the path to Messiah would have been much different. Instead, David listened, and is considered one of the most famous men in all of history despite having been a king over just a tiny backwater nation that was subjective to every significant empire that came before or after him.

Application: This is both a basic and mind-blowing example of what the Lord can do with my shortcomings, not just my good works. Of course, when I work with God and listen to his instructions, I can participate in his will. But even when I stray and think on my own, God can still do great things through me. Of course, that's only true if I then listen to the correction.

I am sure I don't consult God enough before I act, and I don't listen to corrections and redirection when I start down a path. These are the characteristics of being after God's heart ... to seek God's heart above and before your own. That is really what David was always doing, placing God's will and direction ahead of his own thoughts and desires. If I am to truly seek God's heart, I must first seek his guidance every day, and receive his corrections when I forget.

Prayer: Lord, today I do seek your path and your will. May I remember to ask you questions about how to proceed in all matters. If I am going in the wrong direction now, please let me know. Amen.

Staying Focused on the Audience

Scripture: David said to Michal, "It was before the Lord, who chose me rather than your father or anyone from his house when he appointed me ruler over the Lord’s people Israel - I will celebrate before the Lord. I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes. But by these slave girls you spoke of, I will be held in honor." 2 Samuel 6:21-22

Observation: Michal declares her disgust for David by commenting on his display of dancing the day the ark is moved into the City of David. She sarcastically tells him that his display was, effectively, undignified for the king. He was 'half naked' and jumping around, in a manner that even the lowest of the low citizens - the female slaves of the servants - would scoff at.

This then is David's response ... he was dancing for an audience of one. David danced before the Lord, and it is for the Lord's pleasure, honor, and glory that he worshipped. In this, he would do even more, and would behave in even more humiliated ways, if it was to the honor of the Lord. And surely, he points out, if his actions do in fact honor the Lord, then slave girls would hold him in turn in honor indeed.

Application: My actions and behaviors are for God alone, without any concern about how they are received. When I worship, when I read the bible, when I pray ... I do these things for the Lord, and anyone who thinks they are unseemly or undignified is both very wrong and very opposed to God. The only person who matters is God, and those who also love God - the people on earth I truly should want to be around without regard for any other status or position - will completely agree.

Prayer: Lord, today I worship you. May my dancing, my singing, and my celebrating be directed to you alone. You are my audience of one. Amen.

Quite a Different Number

Scripture: In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty) and said, "Brothers and sisters, the Scripture had to be fulfilled in which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus." Acts 1:15-16

Observation: This number - 120 - is interesting, as there are several adjectives used in these verses to describe the believers who are around Jesus. When the disciples return from the ascension of Jesus, 11 are named as returning to the upper room. It then says they stayed therein prayer "along with the women and Mary". We then get this larger number, with Peter speaking of the need to replace Judas from those who have been with Jesus continually from the baptism of John through the ascension (v22) so that person will be a witness of the resurrection.

In other words, there are not 11 disciples here. There are about 120 people who have been active followers of Jesus, continually for over three years, and who interacted with the resurrected Christ. There may be a question of whether or not everyone witnessed the ascension or if that is the designation of the 11 disciples, but there is not doubt that there are these 120 loyal followers who will be the ones who found the original church.

We know who some of these are from the bible ... two will now be considered to take Judas' place as leaders, later others will become deacons, and we are told over various women in their group at that time. We can make logical assumptions of others, like James and Jude, sons of Mary who will become important church leaders, and perhaps other family members as well. And there are church traditions that call out more names, though some have no real evidence to support.

All that said, 120 is a lot more than 11, and represents a significant number of people with total first-hand experience of Jesus' total teachings, death and resurrection, and fulfillment of prophesy.

Application: I have often seen depicted the first believers huddled together ... less than a dozen men, with maybe 2-3 women, sitting in a small room. But I have also seen photos of that upper room, and it would easily hold 120 people for a meeting and meal.

This number of people may not be out pronouncing the good news (yet), but they aren't really huddled scared in the dark, either. They are forming and planning. They are creating organization with the intent of witnessing and ministering. In this passage, I don't see anything like what is depicted in the movies. Instead, I see a significant group, large enough that it can't - and doesn't need to - hide, moving about and actively planning and preparing, defining their leadership following the very-scriptural 10-to-1 and 100-to-1 model.

When Jesus was killed, they were scared. However, in the knowledge of the resurrections, they are no longer scared, even though Jesus also isn't with them now. Since I live completely in the time of that resurrection, there should never be a time I had in a room, either.

Prayer: Lord, I seek your strength to serve you today. I do ask, Lord, that you guide me toward your numbers, your people here at my daily job, so we may serve together. Amen.
