Imitating the Judean Churches

Scripture: For you, brothers and sisters, became imitators of God’s churches in Judea, which are in Christ Jesus: You suffered from your own people the same things those churches suffered from the Jews. 1 Thessalonians 2:14

Observation: In his review of the honor and worthiness of the church in Thessalonica, Paul includes this ... that they are persecuted by non-believers around them, just as the church in Judea has been persecuted by the Jews. He describes this as imitating the Judean churches, though doubtful it was on purpose. Instead, they have held fast to their faith - knowing it is true and inspired by the word of God - despite pressure and even hostility from others.

Application: I do believe there is an element of persecution in my life. I am confident that hostility toward me is partly based on my faith. I know for a fact that the only time I was counseled at my prior job was over a message about Jesus. I also believe that there are those who welcome my downfall and disgrace in part because of my faith, and these same people would be happy to see the same disgrace extend to other church members and leaders.

We are in a time where persecution will increase. I hope I - and brothers and sisters around me - can embrace it as the Thessalonians did. It will be key for us all to stay strong, full of grace and love, despite opposition.

Prayer: Lord, again today I pray for those who are against me. I sincerely hope they find your truth someday in their lives, and accept Jesus as their Lord and savior in that day. I now know enough to know that I could never wish hell upon anyone, and therefore hope they find their way into your love. Amen.
